How to change samba server name
« on: February 02, 2005, 07:00:16 AM »
Hi everyone,

I need help figuring out where to change the samba server name from SME Server (servername) to something other than SME Server. I'd like to change it to something relative to my company name.

The server string must be somewhere in the template area.

It would be nice if this were avaible from the admin control panel.

Thanks,

Michael,

Thank you for the reply but it does not address my issue.

I'll give an example:
I just changed my server name to nserver from the server manager. The server is not a Workgroup or Domain controller. I have Windows workgroup set to home from the Cofiguration>Workgroup panel.

From my XP pro machine, I got to My Network Places>Entire Network>Microsoft Windows Network>Home I see my computer's name and SME Server (hserver) with all the Ibays listed below.

I want to be able to change the string "SME Server" to something else. On a "normal" Samba server, this is the "server string". I believe that on a SME server it is handled through some template someplace.

Please try this:

/sbin/e-smith/db configuration setprop smb ServerString 'Linux Server by Jader'

/etc/e-smith/events/actions/conf-samba

/etc/init.d/smb restart

You can change text inside ' to anything else :D

Thanks to both Denbert and Jader for their feedback to my question. I'm going to try both the template change process and db cconfiguration just to get the experience but I like Jader's more simple db configuration method the best. This bring up another question I have regarding the db configuration method.

I see a lot of configuration changes made the db configuration method on the forums. I would like to know where to find information on the capabilities (paramer list) of db configuration and is there a way to recover from a typo of some parameter that is valid but not what is expected. Do all db configuration changes take place immediately?

I'd check out Vestfyns Ale if I knew where to get it!!

Thanks again,
