« on: February 11, 2005, 12:49:17 AM »
Hi

I am new to the sme community and Linux. My question is, how do I keep my system patched and updated with all the new fixes? What I am looking for is something like windows updates. I just want to keep my sme server secure and working properly. Can someone help direct me?

The SME Server base (unmodified) distro is secure, safe and simple to use. Any security issues should be addressed to security@contribs.org.

On top of the SME Server base distro, many users from the community have developed additional packages (aka contribs) and share them through contribs.org.

Please keep in mind that user submitted contribs/scripts are not officially supported by contribs.org. But can be discussed through the forums on contribs.org and it shows that MANY contribs are usefull to many users.

Use user submitted contribs at your own risk.

Hi stefan24

Does that file contain fixes and patches? Sorry for the dumb questions. I am so use to windows and all the patches/update.

Where would i go to find newly releases fixes and security patches for my SME server?

Please keep in mind that user submitted contribs/scripts are not officially supported by contribs.org.

You make it sound like the base distribution is supported - http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/smeserver/releases/6.0.1/Readme.txt - It clearly is not.

Since the SME Server is now in the hands of contribs.org again, maybe now is the time to include some new features (such as some user contribs) - or at least test some user contribs yourself and give your seal of approval as a safe and secure addition.  That is what we were trying to do with the upgrade script - get as many people as possible testing it, and fix any problems.

Stefan, I think you should link to the wiki page, not the script itself - http://no.longer.valid/phpwiki/index.php/Latest%20version%20of%20update%20scripts - this page has more information/warnings about what the script is/does.

Contribs.org needs you

The SME Server development (aka, the new releases) and maintenance (aka, the updates) depends entirely on the Contribs.org community.

Just to keep all of you up to date, Ian Wells, Floyd Hartog, Dave Kainer and Matthew Copple (sorry if I left someone out) are the people trying to give to this community the SME Server 6.x maintenance and bugfix updates and  bring to live the SME Server 6.5 final stable release.

Contribs.org needs your help on this project.
What can you do for Contribs.org?

# Read the maintenance process:
http://no.longer.valid/phpwiki/index.php/Maintenance%20Process

# Join the devinfo mailing list and offer your help to test, debug, etc:
http://lists.contribs.org/mailman/listinfo/devinfo

# Go to the Contribs.org Bug Tracker and study some of the listed bugs with new or feedback status, simulate them, give your feedback, try to find some sort of solution. Also if you have some packager skills try to build some rpm packages to the listed bugs with resolved or closed status:
http://no.longer.valid/mantis/view_all_bug_page.php

Finally, take these thoughts into seriously consideration (taken from Charlie Brady, a SME core developer):

If maintenance of distribution updates is not a "core role" for contribs.org, then what is?
