PPTP probllem after kernel upgrade please help!
« on: February 15, 2005, 11:00:30 AM »
Hello all,

Hope someone can help me or point me in the right direction.

I installed a new kernel using yum. Now my pptp connection to the server doesn't give me access anymore.
(Using: SME 6.0.1, Old Kernel 2.4.20-18.7, New Kernel 2.4.20-30.7.legacy)

The log tells me:
Quote
Feb 14 16:16:06 wbtich-server modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module ppp-compress-18
Feb 14 16:16:06 wbtich-server pppd[2552]: MPPE required, but kernel has no support.

Feb 14 16:16:06 wbtich-server pptpd[2217]: MGR: Reaped child 2551

I followed instructions for modifying the modules.conf see: http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=24329.0
But that didn't help.

modprobe ppp-compress-18
tells me: Can't locate module ppp-compress-18
I looked here too but that didn't really help to solve the problem. http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/howto-diagnosis.phtml

I badly need a solution to this. Need to manage an offsite server.

Re-install the old kernel - or just boot the old kernel, if it is still installed.

Thanks! (The old kernel is still installed, I think). How do I boot the old kernel? I have never done that. Is there some kind of how to somewhere that can be of help?

Hello irian,

On bootup you should have a few options to boot from ... eg: SME Server Up, SME server SMP and now your new kernal as well. Just choose one of the SME server options to suit your machine eg UP=Uniprocesseor SMP= Mulit Processor.

I did what you did a while ago ... I did a complete re-load after a while ... easy when you don't keep anything on the server.
These days it would ba a bit harder to just do a re-load :) ... I keep a lot more stuff on my server these days.

Regards,

Tib

Hello Tib,

That did it! Thank you very much.

Is there a way to change the bootsequence so that it will boot the correct option automatically?

You can follow MasterSleepy's Kernel upgrade HowTo
http://www.vanhees.cc/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=18&meid=

Take note of Step 4 to 6, this should be of help to you.

Mitel's 6.0 release has a feature where any non-default kernel you choose at boot time becomes the default for future reboots. For a reason that's never been explained, contribs.org didn't pick up that change. You might be able to get that feature by installing the Mitel version of e-smith-lilo. Of course, you'd want to test that first before you do it to your production server...
