Topic: Some newbie questions on Delegating Mail

I am a total newbie to SME server so let me ask you guys if I have this right.

What I want to do is filter for spam and viruses on the SME box and then pass the mail for final delivery to a Groupwise 6.0 box. If I understand everything, all I need to do is setup clamav and spamassassin on the SME box, configure my dns and hosts and then put the IP of the Groupwise box in Delegate Mail.

My question is, do I have to add all my users to the SME box?

Delegate mail server is for outgoing mail only. SPAM and virus filtering is for incoming only (I know that you can scan outgoing messages but that's for new emails going to the recipient).
I don't think it's possible to use SME as you're requesting. Why not configure the clients to pick up mail from the SME box ?

Unfortunately then they would lose the groupware functions of the Groupwise server. We currently run Spamassassin on a windows box, but it doesn't behave as well as it should.

I could be wrong on this but in the email configuration ->Delegate mail servers the option: Address of internal mail server is not for outgoing only.
The option: Address of Internet provider's mail server. is for outgoing only.

I did a quick search on the forums but could not find anything, but I am sure I've read about people who use SME as an ant-ivirus and anti-spam gateway finally passing the email to the delegate internal server.
I wouldn't think you would have to create the user accounts either as SME would be in effect acting as an internal relay mailserver.
I have never tried this configuration but from what I have read this is my interpretation. Like I said I could be way off here and my apologies if I am. Bit stuck for time at the moment but I will chechk it out further later.

I'm actually running an SME/Groupwise system this way until I migrate completely over to the SME.  Mail is routed from a Smoothwall to the SME server which simply has the Groupwise server's IP address specified in the "Address of internal mail server" under Delegate Mail Servers.

At first, mail was being bounced back until I added all the Groupwise users to the SME User list.  Not a problem for 25 users.  

I've run an open relay test and it's locked down.  The SME kicks out the spam, filters attachments for viruses and then just sends it on to the Groupwise server for queuing and delivery.  Groupwise takes care of its own outbound delivery.
