the links i have seen took me to the list and i followed the conversation but that was not publicly placed in the Contribs forums for all to see and comment prior to them taking over.
I'm sorry you feel that the mailing list and the links put on the forum to it were not public enough. The archives to that list were and are publicly available, and anyone can join it. I wasn't on the list and usually just cruised the forums. that was until I saw one of those links and felt it was important enough for me to join the conversation and get invovled.
No question was ever asked direct to the community at large. They seem to have been just told its done deal.
This is true.. But the way things were at the time with RSI it's not like anyone had a choice in the matter, contribs.org belonged to RSI. At the same time many were not to thrilled with the way things were. I also didn't see many people defending the status quo. people just seemed to be wanting change. RSI obliged everyone and handed it over to ruffdogs which was RSI's right no matter what the rest of us may like.
All I did was throw my support behind it because it was change.. movement of some kind that appeared to be going in the direction of getting things organized and clarified. My opinion on the matter was and is, what's the worse that can happen? Things stagnate, implode, fracture or some kind of combination of the 3. It seems we were heading down that road anyway so why not give them a chance.
From what I have seen so far it appears to have been a good idea. Evidenced by the first thing they did which was the social contract.. They are also currently working with their legal counsel as well as contacting both the OSDL and new Software Freedom Law Center to work on how to best protect the communities collective wroks here at contribs.org. That signals to me that they are serious.. But that is just my opinion.
I hope none of this has come across in a nasty tone because that has not been my intent.
