Basically I have  friend who owns two small boarding houses. He would like to offer Internet access to his guests, but does want to restrict access to his guests alone. What he would ideally like is to use SME as a firewall /proxy and have some way of making the proxy return a page with a login, each day the login would change (Nice if this can be automated, and emailed to him)

Is this something someone on here could do for him? Or suggest alternatives? The reason he wanted to use SME is that he already has one small server for his own office use, and intends to get others for this project.

Regards Paul.

I would suggest using monowall instead.

I see waht you mean, but it was not so much the wireless abilities, as the ability to restrict access for web browsing via a password that changed daily.

The idea being anyone can open a browser, go to whatever site they like, and still be presented with the logon screen before they are allowed out onto the net.

The reason why m0n0wall was recommended is that it has captive portal, that does exactly what you need. Take a close look at it.

You can install the contribution that requires a login and password.  You can give your guest the login and password at checking and change it after he is gone.

publicip.net is a good product for this, too.

The authentication of the proxy server is done through a Linux user's login and password.  When you are requested to authenticate ANY user name/password that is vaild will allow access.  So you must be carefull.

What you want can be accomplished by a cron shell script run by "root" that changes passwords for given users at say 4:00am - and the password can be emailed to the administrator or whomever.  But, you would not want to have every login's password modified every night.  However, as stated above if anyone knew the unchanged passwords they could still authenticate.

If you would care to discuss this more email me at larry*at*tm-wd.com.  We could create a fairly elaborate system within the SME structure.

Thanks for all the replies.

Monowall was a bit too fussy on what nics it worked with, but Public IP was exactly what I was after.

Larry you have new mail :-)

Thanks all.
