Topic: using pptp on windows 2000 vpn to log in to remote sme

Have managed to get windows 2000 to log onto a sme server6.0.1 all i did is download high encryption pack from here http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/recommended/encryption/
and using microsoft virtual private connetion through a dial up connection to my server which has a static ip use the static ip to connect to the sme and also tick logon to to domain. it allows you to connect via tcip but not netbue. still trying to work that one out.
Also cannot send email from this conection through server yet.But can use putty  and winSCP3 to login to server.

after messing with the inbuilt vpn client and finding it fairly unstable, I've installed Openvpn using knuddi's howto and my home xp machine hasn't lost a connection in over 2 weeks.
I can login to the server with putty, run remote desktops and print from home to my shop. The only thing I'm yet to get right is remote desktop back to home to help my wife when she's stuffed something up.

What is there to work out? Linux/SME supports tcp/ip, but not netbeui. End of story. netbeui isn't used for Internet access.

 That will teach me to think before posting working in linux enviroment and windows brain gets addled.

You're right on this point but I think the initial need for stiperstone was to access to network resources on Win'PCs. And that's exactly what Samba do on Linux.

With OpenVPN, you can access to Win shares even if you do it through Internet.
