Topic: Best Practice: Using SME Server As A Mail Server Only

I am considering using SME Server as a mail server but I have very little experience with it. I am currently playing around with it but I'd like some assistance from you guys as far as what modules etc you'd recommend to make your "ideal" SME server mail server. For example, what would you use to provide spam filtering, antivirus etc.

Keep in mind though, I'm a novice and that may limit what would work for me.

It would be a server for 30-40 users. I'm still not sure if we'd be using webmail or using MS Outlook and have the SME server as a IMAP server.

Simply install the server and configure the mailserver.

Well, that's a good start. I'm wondering also if I should stick with v6.01 or if 6.5RC would offer any benefits. It doesn't look like it at this point.

Any other suggestions? Does anyone use any other webmail system that they like better such as squirrelmail etc?

Don't use 6.5RC1 for a live system. It is for testing and not final yet.

Make sure you have the appropriate spec server to handle the amount of messages your server will be processing.
It's best to use at least 512 meg of ram if you are using virus and spam filtering.
Other things to take into account:
Is the server just pre-proccessing the messages and forwarding to another server?
Are the users collecting their mail via pop/imap?
Is the server going to have a lot of webmail usage?
