BT broadband and usb modem with sme server?
« on: April 04, 2005, 07:53:28 PM »
Hi

I'm relatively new here(well very new) and am trying to set up smeserver6.0.1.  My problem lies with the fact that I am in the UK and use BT broadband.  So I have a BT voyager 100 adsl usb modem.  Is it possible to use this and if not what is my cheapest soloution?  Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

Not sure if USB modems are supported, I have Blueyonder broadband running via ethernet so couldn't even say how to set it up. From what i've been reading here you may have to go for a ethernet ADSL device, check out ebuyer.com for one of those.

Check out http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=17065.msg66197#msg66197, it may help you out.

Hope this helps,

Arthur

Like Arthur, I use a ethernet modem in conjunction with SME here in the UK (I'm with Bulldog). I've got the Netgear WG834G Wireless Router/ADSL Modem, which retails for about £70 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000TZ8Z8/qid=1112777959/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_3_1/026-1855287-1723628).

I've had no trouble with this device over the last 2+ years, and not an ounce of trouble once I hooked it up to my SME box.

Of course the very-inelegant-but-effective solution if all else fails is to dig around in a trash bin and find any old PC, set it up with Windows 98 w/connection sharing, then use *its* Ethernet connection to feed the WAN NIC of your SME server.

That's the last resort, but it'd for-sure work!  Don't forget to put a software firewall on the Windows box if you do that.
