I am using 6.0.1-01

PC using XP Pro

I have just changed my setup to server-gateway and connect to my ISP using ADSL modem in bridging mode. Dynamic IP.

Connection to the internet works fine (using proxy port 3128)

Now for the problem, I can't get my e-mail to work.

I can't ping my mail server from cmd prompt.

Do I have to open ports 25 and 110?

Could someone point me to a how to set up e-mail in SME. I have tried search but have not found a basic setup. I just have 1 POP3 account with my ISP

Thanks in advance.
Regards,

John A

Do you mean your SME with 'my mail server'?

To empty your ISP-account with SME, goto server-manager -> e-mail
Retrieval mode: multidrop
secondary email: ip or name of your ISP mailserver
Pop user account: accountname login ISP
Pop user password: password login ISP

Should do the trick.

The howto of Jesper is for multiple pop-boxes

If you don't want to use SME server for pop3, use this contrib, it is for multiple pop3 accounts but it also allows you to open or close access to pop3 for workstations behind SME firewall

http://www.schirrms.net/sme/SMEFetchMail.php

Jack

ps this is the best contrib dealing with multiple accounts, newsgroups etc excellent piece of work.
Also clamav will not be able to scan mail retrieved this way.

bosco555,

Thank  you for your reply.

jackl,

Thank you for your reply, I will have a look at your link.

PhoeniX,

Thanks for your reply, I will make the changes to the SME you suggested and give it a try. When I set up my client email program (say outlook express) do I enter the details of my SME server as the incoming and outgoing server or incoming SME and outgoing direct to my ISP's mail server?

I Will let you know how I go.

 :-P
Regards,

John A

When retrieving email with SME, SME will bring the emaials to the users you setup on the SME server.

With the accoutname & password from SME, you can setup your OE. pop3-server: mail.yourdomain.com
smtp-server: mail.yourdomain.com

if you can't ping, then it's a dns or firewall problem. if you are using your isp dns on your xp pc, you won't find the mail server. change/make sure the dns on your pc is set locally as well as the ip and you're not picking it up from the adsl router.

Just an update for those that are interested.

To retrieve my pop account e-mail incoming = mail.myisp.com.au for outgoing mail.myisp.com.au just the same as it was when I had the SME in server only mode.

I have registered my domain name and am using Custom DNS with https://www.dyndns.org. Have made the changes to edit /sbin/e-smith/dynamic-dns/dyndns.org file in my SME. I don't know if it works yet as my line to my ISP has not dropped out yet, so I have the same IP as when I first set it up (3 days ago).

Mail sent to my new domain name works fine as does my web site (only about three line)

Thanks to all those that offered help and suggestions.

Now that I server /gateway with modem in bridge mode I have found that it is fairly easy to VPN into the SME from an XP Machine. The only problem seems to be the speed of the connection (client 512/128 server 256/64)

John A
