Status of version 3.0 and bulletin board?
« on: August 08, 1999, 07:22:52 PM »
I just installed a e-smith server. I works great. However, I have several questions. This BB mentions an upgrade, 3.0, in July. I can see no mention of it on your site. Further, I see no BB activity for some time. Is this still and active BB?

VERSION 3.0:  Gerald, thanks for your post!  Glad you liked v2.03!   Version 3.0 is out on beta and we'll be releasing it for general distribution hopefully by the end of next week.  Thanks for your interest.  Kim

Small business installations and VNC

Thanks for the reply Kim, I am looking forward to 3.0 but will wait for the official release. I have been in this business long enough not to push when it comes to software. Let me tell you how I would like to use E-Smith. I service a number of small businesses. Most are running Windows 95 or 98. doing the usual things, Word, Excel, Peachtree or Quickbooks accounting. I also support a number of accounts that use a Autobody package by CCC out of Chicago. I would like to put a E-Smith server in at each location with high speed internet access. The server would act as a firewall and Samba file server. I would probably use one of the Workstations as a print server. My objective is to use a E-Smith server rather than a NT server and then be able to administer the sites remotely using VNC. Is this an appropiate use of the E-Smith server and do you see any problems.

Thanks,

Jerry

Gerald:  Thanks for your post!  I'm assuming the CCC Autobody package you mentioned is a desktop application and not a network application (if it is, it needs to use the TCP protocol).  We sound like a perfect fit for you, EXCEPT I don't know anything about VNC. I will post a question to our devinfo mailing list, cc: you to the post and let you know the outcome.  I will post the outcome to this bboard as well.  Cheers!  Kim

VNC remote administration:  Thanks to the members of our developer mailing list who were very helpful in responding to my post and to Jerry who provided the URL for VNC (http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/) Several folks have used VNC with the server and it has worked well.  A few people responded with concerns that VNC may not be secure.   SSH is also a simple, relatively secure solution for remote access.  Thanks for the post, Jerry - I got to learn something!  Regards, Kim
