Can't get SIS900 network driver to work!!!
« on: January 15, 2000, 08:02:08 PM »
Hi!

Has anyone had any trouble with making a SIS900 LAN driver work with e-smith?

I'm using version 3.1, on a PC with a PC100 571LMR motherboard, which has the SIS900 in built into the chipset.

Upon looking at the driver config page in e-smith, it shows that the actual driver is for a Realtek card.  Is this correct?

Hope someone can help!!

Many thanks in advance.

Glenn.

The hardware requirements page at http://www.e-smith.net/ lists the rtl8139 driver as being correct for that chipset. I have no reason to believe that to be incorrect.

You haven't said what your problem is. Have you configured the e-smith server and gateway to use the rtl8139 driver? If it doesn't work, what symptoms do you see?

The actual error is:

eth0: Transmit timeout, status 08 0000 media 00.
eth0: Tx queue start entry 4 dirty entry 0, full.

I have been using the computer in win98 with no problems, so I may be missing an extra configuration in Linux maybe?

Sorry for the fuss, I'm a little slow in the Linux / E-Smith field.  I have actually created another e-smith server at work with a 3com card, and it works a treat - well done to you and your company for such a great product - forget NT!!!!!

Many thanks,

Glenn Johnson.

I think you might see those without there being an actual problem.

No, I think it more likely that there is a driver compatibility problem with that network hardware. Am I right in guessing that
networking is not working at all? Or does it seem to work, but there are error messages you are worried about?

You could always use a PCI network card which has better support, if you continue to have problems. Or consult the linux networking gurus.

I think there is a way to go yet to challenge NT in all dimensions. And most of the credit for what the e-smith server does must go to the thousands of linux developers who build the
foundations.

But thanks very much anyway :-)
