port opening
« on: April 20, 2005, 04:44:56 AM »
I installed :

e-smith-portforwarding-0.2.0-02
dmc-mitel-portopening-0.0.1-4

on my SME 6 system, but only port forwarding seems to work.

I am using the bittorrent client Azureus.

When I forward port 6881 to my laptop, I get green faces for 'health', but the configuration wizard's 'test' still gives a NAT error.

If I just open port 6881, it makes no difference. All the health faces are still yellow. Of course, the configuration wizard's test, also gives a NAT error.

Problems with bittorrent are only minor, but we also use VPN here, and so I need to make sure the ports required by that are open.

Can someone help?

Max.

service iptables stop

I advise
Test the application before editing the iptabes...

Once you have checked the application ask back here for further instructions

hope this helps

service iptables stop

I hesitate to do this, since it sounds like it's going to stop the internet access (on a live system, no less), and not do much else.

Can you explain why this would make any difference? Even if iptables needed to be restarted, this would only stop it and not start it again.

What am I missing?

Confused...

BTW, if I do a port scan of my server's external IP address (but using a computer on the internal network), I see this :

Port Scan has started ...

Port Scanning host: snip

    Open Port:    21      ftp
    Open Port:    25      smtp
    Open Port:    80      http
    Open Port:    110      pop3
    Open Port:    113      ident
    Open Port:    139      netbios-ssn
    Open Port:    143      imap
    Open Port:    389      ldap
    Open Port:    443      https
    Open Port:    445      microsoft-ds
    Open Port:    465      urd
    Open Port:    548      afpovertcp
    Open Port:    993      imaps
    Open Port:    995      pop3s
    Open Port:    3128      ndl-aas
Port Scan has completed ...

I'm not sure why all those ports are open. Is it a problem?

Max.

Yes, "port opening" is an absolute waste of time, unless you have installed new software on the server itself.

I don't know what "NAT error" is. Perhaps the documentation of your program will tell you. You should then probably ask for help in a forum specifically for that program.

What does "unless you have installed new software on the server itself" mean?

portforwarding - forward a port from the external network to a machine in your lan
portopening - open a port on your gateway machine (e-smith) itself, don't forward that port to another machine
