SMTP Failure after Server Freeze
« on: April 26, 2005, 02:45:44 AM »
Server froze and after restart SMTP has failed. Error message is "Unable to Set Sender to username@domainname.com" System is still receiving mail OK just no send mail from either Webmail or any email client. Using SME 6.0. Same error message if a new user is added to the system and am not sure where to go from here??

After much log reading, reinstalled Clam and Dungog Anti-Virus, employed some forced installs on the RPMs and SMTP is back in business.

As a result the Control Panel for Spam Assassin has now vanished. Spam Assassin is still functioning but none of the control panels seem to know about it anymore??

Just in case, have you tried:

(i) /etc/e-smith/events/actions/navigation-conf
[this should sort out your server-manager panel if need be...]

and if all fails:

(ii) /sbin/e-smith/signal-event post-upgrade followed by:
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event reboot
[saved me many times... more learned people will tell you what it is all about].
good luck

Ok .. the only way that I could get the Spamassassin control panel back was to do a complete re-install and upgrade to Ver 3.0.

Still having problems with SMTP and if I add the Spamhaus RBL into Spamassassin cannot send mail. Yes have checked that our IP is not on the blocked list!

I can add any other RBL except Spamhaus and don't have a problem. SMTP functions but any changes to Spamassassin take forever to reload and restart?

Doing /sbin/e-smith/signal-event post-upgrade also takes forever but it does get there, followed by /sbin/e-smith/signal-event reboot

So problem at the moment is why does the inclusion of the Spamhaus RBL kill SMTP??

I have no idea what your problem could be, not enough information. Have you checked the logs?  It may be that the your system is now corrupt as a result of too many attempts at getting it right - we all have been there... You should consider a complete reinstall, checking mail operation as you add contributions.  I have in recent times installed SA3 direct from Jesper's site using the script provided, and it works faultlessly each time. Sorry for not being of more assistance.

Thanks for the comforting thought of a reinstall. I am afraid that with 450 email users on this system a reinstall is furtherest from my mind. Unfortunately with this many users when SMTP goes pear shape so does my world :-?
