e-smith or smeserver ?
« on: May 18, 2005, 02:35:12 AM »
At http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/ why is there a smeserver directory and a e-smith directory.

Went looking for smeserver7Alpha13 I was expecting it to live in smeserver but was found in e-smith.

Had to use Distrowatch to find it.

William

This alpha disto is being developed openly by Mitel employees and other volunteers, hence the reason it was in the e-smith directory.

I'm not sure that answered my question.

What is the correct name for the distribution today? E-smith or SME server?

This is how I understand it:

e-smith is the area maintained by Mitel, they put all their e-smith/sme files there. The current sme 7.0 is being led/developed by Charlie Brady from Mitel (& others), so files go there. Mitel is allowing Charlie to do development work on sme that fits in with their requirements so Charlie chooses or is told to put his work there.

smeserver is the area maintained by contribs.org, they put the community produced sme server 6.01 & 6.5 releases there as well as mirroring other contribs that are on the contribs.org site (although I recently notice the mirroring is not up to date).

Thanks Ray.

That explains it.

I gather the Mitel/Contribs.org relationship is a happy one.

If so then maybe this page http://no.longer.valid/phpwiki/index.php?Downloads should be altered to give a listing of the e-smith folder as well and maybe an explanation.
