I have been evaluating SmeServer and have been quite impressed (tried 6.0, 6.5 and 7.0). The one thing that
is putting me off deploying the server is the backup/
restore options.

I would like to be able to do a partial restore (from tape or desktop) if say file(s) are accidentally deleted but it appears the only option is for a full restore of the server.

is there a way of doing a custom restore, selecting only the files needed?

I recommend you get Yosemite Tapeware for your backup purposes.  It is very stable and allows for a variety of restore options.

(The only reason I recommend tapeware is because that is the only program our company has used.  There are many different backup software out there for linux, google it.)

From desktop, you can restore accidentally deleted files using WinZip. Note however that no-one has yet evaluated whether the 4GB desktop backup limit is still a problem with 7.0alpha.

I would suggest that you investigate disk-disk backup options such as backupbox(?), dervish or backuppc for dealing with accidental deletions. You would still use tape (or disk mirroring and removal) for disaster recovery.
