Topic: newbie DNS/Domain questions

Hey,
I've got SME 5.0 setup and running.  I've got my static ip internet connection up and running (no dhcp or pppoe).  Now, I'm confused how to setup my domain to route over to my ip.  Under the other sections in the manual it makes it clear that those should use dynamic dns services.  Is this true for a static ip address as well or is there another way of setting everything up on it?  Does SME depend on all connections to use dynamic dns or what do I do next?  Thanks for any help.

With a static IP, all you need to do is to go to somewhere like ZoneEdit (www.zoneedit.com) and configure your IP to point to your domain (assuming it's a "real" registered one). The instructions to do this are very well laid out on ZoneEdit's site. If your ISP provides DNS services (some do), you can do the set-up there as you then wouldn't need to use ZoneEdit. The dynamic stuff in the manual is to help those who need to add the step to their box to regularly check for IP changes and to then update the DNS provider's records with the new IP.

Zone Edit seems cool, it is sort of worries me about their zone system (going over 200 megs in DNS queries or any restrictions worry me).  Maybe I'm wrong in my understanding.  It almost seems like you have more free dynamic dns services to use which would seem to make definitely free to do.  I checked out Granite Canyon a bit but it is fairly confusing and my isp does not provide DNS services.  Any other suggestions?

Try DNS2GO..... http://www.dns2go.com

There are instructions on how to use it/set it up in the e-smith 4.1.2 and I don't think this will make much difference to the 5.0. Look at the HowTo section.

i am running on 5.0 too, i use dyndns.org .
The best part of dyndns.org and e-smith is that it has a bilt in settings for dyndns so you dont have to configure it in any way other than set the user name and password and domain.

the bad thing is that in dyndns.org you can only set up 5 domains.
have a look at dyndns.com too (it is the commertial site)

as i have understood from the dyndns.org news that in europ there is only 1 server(uk) and as i am in eastern europe i get surprisingly fast to my server site (from outside the lan). I reccommend dyndns.org as it is very easy to set up.

Do you use the dynamic dns or the static dns or the custom dns services of dyndns.org?  I only need the one domain setup...I can see that you can setup subdomains for free but it appears custom domains are 30 dollars flat fee...or am i just misunderstanding the information on the site?
