Auto backup to workstation
« on: May 27, 2005, 10:20:29 PM »
Heya,

I've been doing some researching on how to set up a nightly backup schedule to one of the workstations linked to the server. I'm only interested in backing up the contents in the primary files directory, not the entire server itself. Could this be done? It appears to me that it can only be accomplished manually, which would be a huge pain.

Any help would be appreciated..

Thanks

What is the workstation OS?

Is it the intire primary dir you want or just /files?

Hi there,

Darrell May's contrib backup2ws will enable you to do this. Just set the directories that you want to backup and schedule it and it'll run away fine.

Sorry, can't remember offhand where the contrib is located but should be under the 'dmay' folder in the contribs listing.

Hope this helps,

Arthur

The workstation OS is XP, and yes, it's just the primary/files directory i'm concerned with.

Arthur: I will install this tonight and give it a try.

Thanks again, I appreciate your responses.

In case it wasn't obvious you will need to specify the source location in full eg
/home/e-smith/files/ibays/Primary/files
...

Soups,

If your OS is Windows XP then the easiest way to make a scheduled backup is to use windows backup.

Start -> All Programs -> Accessories – System Tools -> Backup

Use Scheduled Jobs to setup daily backup – it’s possible to make incremental backup.

Denbert ->

If you use the Windows utility, do you access the sme server via a samba share or via ftp "to pull out" a copy og the ibay ?

(Don't know why I did never use the windows utility  .. sounds like a good idea.)

Arne.

Arne ->

Samba is the way I use it.

Setup the ibay as a network drive and then just follow the wizard.
