Weird internet connection problem
« on: May 28, 2005, 05:22:00 PM »
I recently re-installed SME Server (6.0.1), did a backup from desktop and then ran the SMEPlus script.  I had to do this because the console was dead and I wasn't able to access it due to some problem with inittab.

I set the server up in server-gateway mode, and had my modem in bridge mode to the server.  Now, the server was connected to PPPoE, and I was able to ping any address.  Also, the client PC was able to ping from command line.  But when I tried to use the internet, it always came up with the "Connectioned refused" alert.

I wasn't sure what to do about this as everything else seems to be working fine, and it has always worked without a fuss in the past.  For now i'm using my modem to connect and sitting the server in server only mode.   But then it hampers my VoIP so i really want to get to the bottom of this...

Any ideas?
Thanks

Cydonia,

What type of modem do you have? Dialup or DSL?

Both are relatively simple to setup. If you are running a version of windows on a workstation try getting a copy of PuTTY and log into a secure shell using your admin account. This will allow an Administrator console and you run the configuration process from here. When you get to the connection type select "Dedicated" and where it asks what connection method use send client name and password. Continue with the configuration and once at the end it will ask to reboot. Say yes to this and then (all going well) should allow access. For even greater security select Private Server/Gateway mode.

See how this goes.

Hi Aus,

I'm quite familiar with SME in that regard.  I have a feeling the problem could have been due to dodgy custom templates... anyway, I didn't have time to properly troubleshoot it and so its sitting behind the router for now.

I'm just going to get a better router so I can manage redirection better...

Happening to me too.

Same thing is happening to my SME box, after a hard drive died, replaced it, fresh install, restore from desktop, SMEPlus script.  I'm fairly sure my problem is because I restored from desktop AND ran SMEPlus script.  Things are not 'meshing' between what I had that is stored in restored backup and the SMEPlus script(which of course has been updated since I first ran it previously, before the hard drive died).  I'm either going to re-install, then restore from backup and put in updates one at a time to see where it croaks or re-install and start anew.  My problem is similar, "Connection Refused" messages on a regular basis, but not always.  And while images load on some websites, they do not on others when I can get them to work(no, Dansguardian is not installed, nor any other URL filter).  Spent a night working over the Squid cache, no luck there, so off to the 2 options I stated earlier.

If it is the same problem, i'm sorry to report that I never figured this one out.

I had to do a reinstall again for another reason so its now in Server-gateway mode running fine.
