No kidding. The part where I couldn;t access the ne was a bit of a clue ot me too <grin>
>You need to be more specific, what error message do >you see in the logs >eg /var/log/messages, /var/log/httpd....
Well if I knew where the logs were kep and how to reead them or to forward them to my winblows machine so I could read them with wordpad I guess I could look at them but all I really knowq how to do is start the sucker up and hope to God she runs. Like I said I'm new to Linux and don't know squat about it. At least I'm honest to admit I'm learning and don;t know spit.

>Exactly which sme version 6.0 or 6.0.1 or ??

The versoin was 6.0. I downloaded it and used Nero to burn the iso. Then used the cd to do the install.
>What are you doing when it makes you believe >it "refuses to connect to the net" ?
Well I logged onto the machine and went ot where the menu says "test internet access" and it said "nope not going there"
>What is your general setup, ie server-gateway, ADSL >bridged modem or router etc ?
I'm seto to server & gateway - dedicated, DHCP enabled (send ethernet address as client id), do not use dynamic DNS. I've tried with the net cards normal and swapped. Both ways and it's a no go.
>You would be very unwise to use v5.6 as it is no >longer supported & bound to have security problems.
Hey if it works and I can't get 6 to get on the net what am I supposed to do?
>There were changes & few things were stricter in 6 >than in 5.6 so perhaps you have been caught by one >of those gotchas.
I'd say the fact I can't get on the net is a deffinite gotcha.
>Have you carefully read the release notes for 6.0 to >see if any changes may affect your situation ?
I've read the docs till I'm blue in the face. I posted several questions about the upgrade from 5.6 to 6 here in the forums but nobody seemed to have a reason why the upgrade shouldn't work. I tried it and sure enough just like I thought the upgrade gaffed net access. I'm glad I kept a backup of the system before I upgraded so I could swap back and be up and running again until I can figure what's up with this.
I'm not a total screwup - I'm still practicing!
