6.0 won;t connec tto the net!

:hammer:
I installed 6.0 and no matter what it refused ot connect to the net. I figured maybe because it's the upgrade so I wenrt back and reinstalled from scratch. Same junk - no connect. I can browse the local network but no body can connect to the net.

I went back and re-read the entire manual for 6 both the techie manual and the admin one. I didn't get any help from either one.

I tried every config change I could think of fgrom swapping the network cards, you name it. Nothing.

I figured okay fine. I know there was stuff in the manual regarding network acess when I upgraded and I NEED this to work so as a last resort I went back and reinstalled 5.6 then restored from a backup I made before the upgrade. It works fine and everyone can access the network.

what the heck happened? Why can 5.6 access the internet but 6 will not under any conditions? Am I stuck back at 5.6 or what?

Can someone please tell me if you have any ideas. Thanks

There are lots of v6.x successful installs out there, you most probably have a configuration problem.

You need to be more specific, what error message do you see in the logs eg /var/log/messages, /var/log/httpd....

Exactly which sme version 6.0 or 6.0.1 or ??
If 6.0 did you install the Mitel updates ?

What are you doing when it makes you believe it "refuses to connect to the net" ?

What is your general setup, ie server-gateway, ADSL bridged modem or router etc ?

You would be very unwise to use v5.6 as it is no longer supported & bound to have security problems.

There were changes & few things were stricter in 6 than in 5.6 so perhaps you have been caught by one of those gotchas.

Have you carefully read the release notes for 6.0 to see if any changes may affect your situation ?

No kidding. The part where I couldn;t access the ne was a bit of a clue ot me too <grin>

Well if I knew where the logs were kep and how to reead them or to forward them to my winblows machine so I could read them with wordpad I guess I could look at them but all I really knowq how to do is start the sucker up and hope to God she runs. Like I said I'm new to Linux and don't know squat about it. At least I'm honest to admit I'm learning and don;t know spit. :)

The versoin was 6.0. I downloaded it and used Nero to burn the iso. Then used the cd to do the install.

Well I logged onto the machine and went ot where the menu says "test internet access" and it said "nope not going there"

>What is your general setup, ie server-gateway, ADSL >bridged modem or router etc ?

I'm seto to server & gateway - dedicated, DHCP enabled (send ethernet address as client id), do not use dynamic DNS. I've tried with the net cards normal and swapped. Both ways and it's a no go.

Hey if it works and I can't get 6 to get on the net what am I supposed to do?

I'd say the fact I can't get on the net is a deffinite gotcha.

>Have you carefully read the release notes for 6.0 to >see if any changes may affect your situation ?

I've read the docs till I'm blue in the face. I posted several questions about the upgrade from 5.6 to 6 here in the forums but nobody seemed to have a reason why the upgrade shouldn't work. I tried it and sure enough just like I thought the upgrade gaffed net access. I'm glad I kept a backup of the system before I upgraded so I could swap back and be up and running again until I can figure what's up with this.

I'm not a total screwup - I'm still practicing!

In that case you should know how to access the logs using server manager !
eg https://www.yourdomain.com/server-manager
log in as admin
View log files

Apart from that I just told you where the logs are
eg /var/log/messages, /var/log/httpd.... etc etc etc

Log in as root at the server console or via putty ssh on your Windows box to access these.
cd /var/log
then use pico or similar or mc to view the files

Note the above will only work if your basic network setup is correct though !

It strikes me you need to get slightly more serious in your approach to troubleshooting, you can't just gloss over things by saying I'm a beginner and I've read everything and the answers are not there !
You need to make an effort where the information is obviously there.

> ...."test internet access" and it said "nope not going there"

So this is the basic problem

How about you quote all the settings you enter when doing the Configure this server, screen by screen please. You can disguise your IPs & domain name if you wish

> server & gateway - dedicated, DHCP enabled (send ethernet address as client id), do not use dynamic DNS.

You didn't mention whether you have a static IP, a bridged modem or router and what type of Internet connection you use, cable, ADSL etc., but that should all come out if you quote all your settings
