Backup to usb
« on: May 24, 2005, 01:51:58 PM »
Hi All,

I would like to backup my sme server to a USB harddrive insted af my old DAT drives, because there is not nearly enough space on the old dat drives any longer. So my question is, how do i configure the server to do that, I would also like to receive a job report (e-mail) after the backup job has "complete". I have been browsing the forum, but was not able to finde any detailed guide. I am quite new to linux, so please provide lots of comments on what you are doing, and why!. Any help would be much appreciated.

Info:
SME Server Ver 6.0

on:
Compaq Proliant 1600 Dual PII 500 (USB)
The server has 1 GB memory
The harddisks are configured in a hardware raid 5.

Regards Troels.

Hi there,

I think it IS possible to backup direct to a USB hard disk from the SME Server but am not sure how, I did stumble onto something a while back but can't remember where.

Another approach would be to use Darrel May's contrib Backup2ws which will allow you to backup to a shared drive of a network attached computer. You could quite easily set it up to backup directly to a USB attached device therefore backing up directly to the USB drive through the use of the other machine. You would also get the email confirmation that you rquire. A long winded way I agree but it would work. I use this as my backup method and have done a full backup and restore to another machine and it works great.

Hope that helps,

Arthur

Hi Again,

I have sucessfully installed a redhat 9.0 server, running a samba server, so now Darrel May's contrib Backup2ws comes in handy, but it stops backing up after 2,097,152 mb. Strange ?? has anyone got any ideas?.

Troels,

Check out this thread: http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=27473.0

The interesting part is that arne has managed to backup his server to a USB drive, so you might want to contact him for info.

Problem almost solved

Hi,

Where do I get in contact with Arne?. The problem I had yesterday is almost solved. I configured the file size to 2,096,152, so now it is spanning the backup into small files. The next problem I have is on my DMZ interface there's only 10 mbps bandwidth due to an old hub, that one has got to go!.

40960000 / 1000 /3600 = aprox. 11 hours

That I didn't think about before i started out on this little project. hmmm :o)

Troels,

I'd try clicking on the "PM" button under one of his posts.  Never done it, but in theory it should send him a private message that he'll get next time he logs into the forums here.
