accessing email thru vpn

ok everone, this may be a dumb question, but I am known for that! can a user who is accessing sme 5 thru vpn use the connection to access his email, thru his normal outlook/eudora/whatever email program? I dont want to spend the effort setting up remote machines otherwise. it needs to be able to access in the normal send recieve mode that most email browsers function. I would think this ould be fairly straightforward, but you never know.
thanks in advance

Tom,

I have users accessing Email through VPN using outlook. This was done for security reasons as passwords in Emails are sent unencrypted.

I found that if the mail server address on the outlook clients was set to "mail.mycompany.com" that sometimes Windows 2000 would find the server via the Internet rather than VPN, defeating the purpose of VPN.

To get around this I made the POP3 and SMTP entries in Outlook setup = 192.168.1.1, the internal network address of the E-smith box. This forced Windows to look on the VPN for the server.

This may not be the proper way but it has been working for many months on 7 laptops. I am using E-smith 4.1.2 but should not be any different on SME5.

Regards
Martin

THANKS!
this was driving me nuts. Using the internal ip makes it work perfectly!
