Supported SME server updates
« on: June 17, 2005, 06:40:22 PM »
Hello everybody,

I´m running SME for a while now. I known there are some problems with the contribs organisation and that ruffdogs is solving them. But I can´t wait anymore for the offical releases since there is no release calendar. But i want to upgrade my servers. So i was wondering if there are some official supported updates for sme 6.0.1 server that i can use. And still be compatible with the new version of SME in the future. Or even better does anyone known when the next version of SME will be released. Because i really like to upgrade.

Can anybody help me

ps. Maybe somebody of Ruffdogs can answer this ??????

What do you mean by "supported updates"?

What is broken on your current SME Server that requires updating?

I would like to update php and mysql en still be able to running the normal update installation when a new SME release is out.

With supported updates i mean to say. Updates that you can used and still be compatible with the new release of SME. i saw some updates here and there. But what is the use of updating when it's not going to be in the next official release of contribs sme.

I ask this because a have a few production servers running which need to be updated. with newer versions of the software running like php mysql ssh ...

ps. nothing is broken and i would like to keep it that way.

i wouldn't upgrade anything on a production server unless i knew for certain the upgrade would work and/or if there is a dire need. Why take a chance with production server that's working?

With that said, you may want to wait for official released versions to upgrade. Of course, there are no guarantees if you applied a contrib, and i would suggest all work done on a test server first.

it would be great to know what versions you are using. the sme+ upgrades to php 4.3.10-3 & MySQL 4.0.22-0

> I would like to update php and mysql

There is a script to update php, which should be updated for security reasons if you are using php apps.
Any isues with OS upgrade problems would be resolved later, if you don't upgrade php now then you may get hacked. The choice is yours as to which outcome is likely to be worse.
Personally I don't think a php upgrade will cause any future OS upgrade problems as the new OS is likely to have a newer version of php anyway. sme 7 has php-4.3.2-23

As for mysql there are also HOWTOs available, I 'm not aware of security issues with mysql so the "need" to upgrade is really related to wanting/needing newer features of mysql.
I have upgraded to v4.0.20 without trouble following the HOWTOs because we needed to run apps that required v4.x features.
Not sure if there will be problems at that level of upgrade eg 4.x, upon checking I notice that sme 7alpha still has mysql-3.23.58-16. Worst case I guess would be a downgrade to the original mysql, run the OS upgrade and then upgrade mysql as required.

If you don't really need to upgrade then don't, less chance of problems that way.

Contribs.org needs you

The SME Server development (aka, the new releases) and maintenance (aka, the updates) depends entirely on the Contribs.org community.

Just to keep all of you up to date, Ian Wells, Floyd Hartog, Dave Kainer and Matthew Copple (sorry if I left someone out) are the people trying to give to this community the SME Server 6.x maintenance and bugfix updates and  bring to live the SME Server 6.5 final stable release.

Contribs.org needs your help on this project.
What can you do for Contribs.org?

# Read the maintenance process:
http://no.longer.valid/phpwiki/index.php/Maintenance%20Process

# Join the devinfo mailing list and offer your help to test, debug, etc:
http://lists.contribs.org/mailman/listinfo/devinfo

# Go to the Contribs.org Bug Tracker and study some of the listed bugs with new or feedback status, simulate them, give your feedback, try to find some sort of solution. Also if you have some packager skills try to build some rpm packages to the listed bugs with resolved or closed status:
http://no.longer.valid/mantis/view_all_bug_page.php

Finally, take these thoughts into seriously consideration (taken from Charlie Brady, a SME core developer):

If maintenance of distribution updates is not a "core role" for contribs.org, then what is?

Don't ask what contribs.org can do for me, ask what I can do for contribs.org.
