hi,

sme server is running fine for me but there a small noob problem i have.

Im sitting behind the server, and want to give some i-bays chmod acces for some php scripts that needs that.

How do i do that?
i dont know how to come into a console to search in directorys.

sorry for the bad english im from holland

and i have another question:

is it possible to install a graphical desktop program like kde? if so, how do i do that?

That should get you started.
You can find the manual by clicking "Documentation" in the left navigation pane.

Anything that runs on linux, can (in theory) be installed on smeserver.
You might run into dependency problems, for that, just read up on yum.
I hope you don't have a download limit.

Why would you want to install desktop software on a server? Well, it's your choice I guess.

ok found my way into console to do some chmod things.

is there a graphical/webbased solution for this, because this console working is very annoying.

please tell me im not the only noob who has problems with this.

such a fine distro but lacks the noob based working skill.

ok im not that noob in linux , but it is still hard for me to work things out.

and please tell me if there is a solution for it!

1st: Try to look around before asking, I'm very sure there have been plenty of posts specifying /home/e-smith/files/ibays as the ibay location. In fact, I just posted something related.

There is some kind of graphical file management interface. I ask you to read a bit more of the chapter I specified earlier.

I wonder what kind of rights you wish to set on the ibays. You should realise this is a good way of breaking access, unless you get it exactly right.

Usually you would not need to get into the console for server administration/management. The console requiring at least some linux knowledge shields the server from, well, newbies breaking anything (this is just a bonus, there are other reasons, I just don't have 'm ready).

Don't know about whether its possible, but I do know that there is no need for this.

Between server-manager and Putty, you have all the config you need.

i know i can use server-manager and putty, but i want it a little simpler because i dont know al the commands, and i just want to make it clickable. like the webbased manager but then for the configuration of the server in graphical mode.

thats why i asked if there was a solution like kde on sme server or something.

it's hard for me to explain in english.

i want it simple (Philips) Sence and simplicity.
that kind of simple thinking.

I must tell you im not a Linux console fan, i like the ghaphical kde style. very helpfull and also very affective.

if somebody know's if this is already posted please post the link of it so that i can study it.

and please i like real good answers with links, i search enough. forum is to big to search for my answers within 1 day. thats why im asking you guys to help a fellow patriot

How strange - you want a GUI for server management & I curse every time I have to admin a Windows 2003 server.

Learn the commands & you'll find that the commandline gives you much better control than a blunt instrument like a GUI. It's also much quicker & won't give you confusing error messages when it can't do something.

You say you want to configure the server just like you use the server-manager web interface. The server-manager is intended for the configuration.

If you want it simple, like Philips advertises about, "technology as simple as the box it came in", don't go into the console. SME should be working just fine without modifications. Simplicity does come with limitations, such as lacking the posibility to change access rights for specific ibays like you say you want to...

Since this is file manipulation, I believe "Midnight Commander", which was what I referred to in the manual, should do just fine. Type "mc" at the console prompt.

If you're not ready to go with any of the solutions, or do not want to go into specifics about what you want to achieve, try to figure it out yourself. Google is your friend in that. If you get stuck, just ask about the thing your stuck on.

I'm not trying to be rude or offend you, it's just imho clear their is little interest in figuring out how to install a gui. Going "anybody wanna do the thinking for me" won't work you know.

If you're really getting stuck on the english, just "pm" me in dutch, and I'll see about translating it into the thread..

first : in de webbased configuration, i cant configure mysql databases or other components.

second: cant configure apache/PHP in webased manager

third: no page on the webbased manager to change rights for users.
(only in console mode) I want this in the webbased manager. i mean: if you have it webbased lets do it all webbased then!
And i know abouth the security reasons but it can be done.

(There are no rules-Morpheus-The matrix)

including al those things i said before.
give it a more webmin kinda taste.

because when they do that, you no longer have to use the console any more and no longer have to use two side's of config typs.

This can sound kinda noob for u technical guys but SME is missing alot of simplicity

for some people (including me) this kind of server, is just to damn hard to administer.
It has so many good feature's but missing the simple config via webbased manager.(of all te programs thats on SME)

I dont know if i can put this in the sugestion topic.
but i will make a list of things that could be usefull for all of us. and maybe the Contrib guys could make that idea realistic.
