My mailserver is slower then ever
« on: June 22, 2005, 05:58:28 PM »
Hi everybody!
I recently installed a SME 6.01 to use it as a mail server. I also installed the antivirus ad spamassassin from swerts-knudsen's howto and everything went ok for a few days. Last night, because of a power failure, my server stopped. In the morning I started the server but since then I have a lots of problems. My proxy doesnt work anymore, my mails are dead both in and out, etc.
Even when I try to log in as root I have to wait almost 30 secconds. And in all this time my HDD is working and working and....
Anybody can give me an ideea of what should I do?

Thx

Step 1 would be to disconnect from the Internet to be absolutely certain that your system is not relaying spam. Try to reboot, and bring the system up "single user" (i.e. without most services running) and then have a look through log files to see what has been going on.

To boot single user, type "control X" at the splash screen, then "Mitel-SME single" at the lilo prompt.

If you are using software raid, it may be rebuilding.

How much ram do you have? 512mg seems to be the sweet spot if you are going to use the virus/spam filtering.

mail to be sent by my server has been very slow ever since I installed clamav
it may take a couple of minutes for a message to leave the mailer or the web interface to the mailserver.
stopping clamav from scanning outgoing mail makes no difference (and there are no windows mail clients in use, so it's not a problem).
No, I'm not relaying spam.
no, I don't have software raid.
I've got 386Mb of memory and would happily add a bit more if it would speed up the mail sending.

Did ou both enable RBL lists in the Spam Filter panel. If you enable a lot of ists you will find that sending mail is slow due to lookups of your local IP on theRBL lists. Better to use 1,2 3 or 4 lists max.

thanks for that. i've reduced the number of RBLs from 5 to 3 so i'll see how that goes.

There is no point at all in doing RBL lookings of LAN addresses. Whatever SPAM filtering contrib is being used should be modified so that RBL lookup is only done for inbound (from the Internet) mail.

Hi

Try this

My server was slower than a lzy dog after a fat steak.

/sbin/e-smith/config setprop imap ConcurrencyLimit 400
/etc/e-smith/events/actions/imap-conf
svc -t /service/imap

This sorted the mongrel and made it a breed.

Hope this helps.

I suffered the same slowliness behaviour with only 1 RBL setup.

What may have caused it?
