upgrading from a highly modified 5.6 to 6.0.1-01
« on: June 23, 2005, 06:05:55 PM »
I'm replaceing my highly modifed sme 5.6 server with a new machine. I need to setup the users, ibay, virutal domains the same and I can do that manually - but was wondering if someone had made an automated procedure to do that.

I tried doing a backup to desktop of the old server but with almost 20 gigs of data - that failed at around 2 gigs.

I've found a howto to move users and passwords which was the one that I wanted to automate the most - since i don't have written records of all the users passwords.

Have you considered just to run the upgrade and see what happens. There are some upgrade processes that happem that will move your users and config over smoothly to a 6.0.x box. It is a supported upgrade path,
Theoretically you should remove many of the add on contribs that are not compatible with 6.0.x.
You can check to see if newer versions are available for 6.0.x and remove those first, this avoiding problems before they happen
rpm -e packagename

A lot of other custom config changes may work OK as 5.6 and 6.0.x have a lot of similarities conceptually, depends on what mods you have made.

Generally though it would be wise to temporarily remove any custom templates before the upgrade and replace them after the upgrdae, one by one to see if they break anything.

Ensure you have a good backup though first.

You could then do a backup from the upgraded 6.0.x box and transfer that to the new 6.0.x box using backup2ws and restore. See below.

> I tried doing a backup to desktop ... failed at around 2 gigs.

A search on backup would have found this info quite easily.
The included backup to desktop has issues when the resultant backup file is greater than 2Gb. In that case install backup2ws contrib (get the right version for sme 5.6) and specify a size limit less than 2Gb and the backup2ws will split the backup file into multiple parts, as if it is one large file in many pieces.
Choose the Disaster Recovery 911 backup job to backup all config, users and data on your server, don't do a backup of all file systems as this won't work correctly upon restore.

Use that to restore to your new machine with backup2ws contrib installed also. It may take a few hours to complete though.

There is one at techgeeks and also there are the LAT tools contrib to do that which both appear to work.

Ray,

I've seen you mention the 911 backup a few times but where do I find it?

All I have is
Quote
Backup to workstation

Use this panel to define, schedule and launch server backups and restores, to and from Windows workstation shares.

Click here to create a new backup job.

Click here to enable the Disaster Recovery backup job.

Click here for advanced Disaster Recovery restore options.

There are no backup jobs in the system.

Maybe I have the wrong contrib installed.

William.

You could have easily found this if you bothered to search the contribs folders.

Install the backup to workstation contrib (backup2ws) from Darell May

I did bother to search... sometime ago.

That is why I had smeserver-backup2ws-0.0.1-21.noarch.rpm installed and now smeserver-backup2ws-0.0.1-22dmay.noarch.rpm.

How else would I have posted what I see?

The question is where inside of this contrib do I see the word(or number) 911 ?

Hmm..

Looking a little closer I see that rar files will be created starting with 911.

It all seems a little obscure to be refering to a 911 backup if this is the only reference to 911.

To quote I clearly said "Disaster Recovery 911 backup job"
and that is one of the first choices you get to do when you look at the Backup to Workstation panel,
ie "Click here to enable the Disaster Recovery backup job", which creates a job with a number 911.

"In that case install backup2ws contrib (get the right version for sme 5.6) and specify a size limit less than 2Gb and the backup2ws will split the backup file into multiple parts, as if it is one large file in many pieces.

Sorry I thought you meant where do I find it on the web, but you meant where in the contribs panel.

I was expecting something like

Click here to enable the Disaster Recovery 911 backup  job.

to be on the first page.

All is well now.
