HI all,
I have a performance question.
My system:
Compaq Presario 100P
PIII - 500 MHz
192 MB SD-RAM
eth0 = 3Com 3C905 10/100
eth1 = 3Com 3C905 10/100
HDD = Seagate 40 GB IDE
SME 6.01-01, Gateway/Server
PPPoE client - 256/64 kbps ADSL - fixed IP
Knuddi's SpamAssassin, ClamAV
PPTP enabled
Webmail
etc...
1 domain, 2 users
LAN goes to a Netgear WG602 V1 802.11g Access Point, PC and lapops connect in wirelessly (can't run cables in house). Running 128 bit WEP, and yes, I know about the 10% performance hit using this.
The question is this: on this system, I believe that I should get higher than anywhere between 250 KB/sec - 600 KB/sec transfer rate when doing a backup. Is that realistic with the above specs? Do people think it is a limitation of the wireless or of the system not able to throw the data on the wire fast enough? Using 802.11g I thought that I should be getting a much higher transfer rate.
I have tested using a PII-400 MHz laptop using a Xircom RealPort 10/100 PCMCIA card, connected directly into the eth0, and got about the same transfer speed. But am unsure if that machine is fast enought to receive the data from the server faster! Or it is a limitation of the server itself.
Edit: When the WAP is power cycled I can seem to get consistently about 550 - 600 KB/sec. The PC and laptops report 100% signal strength.
Any comments appreciated.
