getting pop3 email on an win machine inside internal network

stjohn

Hi,
new to sme so lots to learn! I'm having problems getting my mail from an external pop3 box. I have just set up sme server and everything works great. I have a dual homed sme server with one interface conecting to an adsl modem and the internet with a static ip and the other interface connected to a hub and the internal lan. The sme server is set up in server and gateway mode. I would like to pick up my external pop3 email via a windows machine on the internal lan using the existing mail client on the this windows machine. Is this possible and how do I set it up ? many thanks.

Hi there,

First of all welcome. It's always great to see more and more people taking to SME.

Secondly, not wishing to sound too cheeky but, might I suggest that you grab yourself a copy of the SME docs and have a read through. I think you'll find a lot of useful information in there about getting your server running and the various things that can be done using SME. You will also find an further details on configuring email.

In answer to your question, you sure can. I tend to use the IMAP protocol, no particular reason, just what I'm used to. When configuring the clients, just use the SME server IP for incoming and outgoing servers or you could of course specify you ISPs SMTP server for sending mail as I'm sure a fair few people do here.

Hope this helps,

Arthur

To collect email directly from your ISP on your workstation you need to disable the transparent SMTP proxy. See the relase notes
ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/smeserver/releases/6.0/iso/RELEASE-NOTES.txt

Note that disabling this will allow viruses to easily be sent from compromised (infected) workstations.

Ultimately you would be better off setting up your server to be a smtp mail server and allowing it to collect the mail for you. You can get yourself a domain name, either at cost or a free one from dyndns & others etc.

Hi,
thanks for the response (i'm working through the documentation!) I will set up the sme box as an smtp mail server and start collecting my own mail. I'm going to disable the transparent proxy just to see if it works (i.e can i pick up the mail from my isp) Anyway your comments have a cleared up a couple of issues for me.

many thanks,

St.john

If you keep/prefer to use your ISP mailbox account eg yourname@ISP.com, then forward that mail to the new server email address eg yourname@mydomain.com
