I have been playing around with SME server on and off for a year or so now but I'm still a big newbie.

I want now to use SME as a simple file server for a windows network using samba however I don't want the hassle of typing in the username and password to access a share on the server plus it causes problems for mapped drives and other remapped resources rerouted to the sme shared user directory. Is there a way or an add on available that removes this authentication, there is no need for authentication in my environment and I just want to be able to write, read, modify and create files etc without authentication.

now if I am not mistaken other distros of linux such as red hat allow samba to be configured to not use any type of authentication and allow all users full access no questions asked.

Any help is much appreciated.

GO LINUX GO!

It might depend which version of Windows you are using but later versions will ask for the user name and password and have an option to remember the password, if you check the box to remember the password it will never ask again.

it's your network setup. if you are using the sme as a domain controller, you don't have this problem. hence domain controller, it controls the users/passwords.

if you have it setup as a workgroup then this will always be there. and you'll need the same user/pass for each computer

It has been a while but I think this works:

-Add a user to your server with the same details as the user you logon as to your desktop (user and identical password)

-Restart your PC or issue 'net use /d *' (the first is probably safer as it wont sever any connections you have open eg. files). This flushes out any connections which have been made using the details you had to manually type before.

- You should now be able to open folders without any hassle.

If you need to do this with the Primary i-bay then I think you need to make the new user part of the administrators group.
