Topic: workgroup share

Hi all,

I am getting nowhere with setting up a workgroup share that all users can access.  I have a setup of windows XP Pro PCs and an SME 6.0.1 server.  Am I missing something?

There is a shared folder for each user. And by default the admin account is active therefore you do have an admin folder shared on your network from the server out of the box. You will need to use your admin username and password (something i want to find a way around hence my previous post).

If your server is setup correctly then you should be able to access it from run on xp pro. Use \\server where server is the name of your server. If this does not work I have found rebooting SME server. Check the server is running and is networked correctly by going to http://servername.server-manager/

My guess is that you have connectivity problems with the server or the machine attempting to connect to it. Try pinging the server from command.

Hi John,

I can see the admin share if I run \\sme1 (for example).  What I am trying to setup is a central share let's call it "company" as a repository of general documents that users access every day, also so that I have everything in 1 place, makes it easier to backup.  I had done this on an SCO box, but in here I am lost...sorry for the trouble and thanks again

so basically you don't want any authentication so that users can access the data and create the data without the need to know admin name and password?  

by the way i put the wrong server manager url in my last post

as long as we can get the authentication hting sorted which i need in order to set up my workgroup server....I would do this....


Create a user called 'company' then that users share on the server will be company ie. \\server\company you get your 'company' share even though its really a users directory, get what i mean?

I'm having a play on with SME right now after not touching it for a while, I see what you mean it isn't so simple.

Well the users have their own passwords, and they can access their own folder, as the admin user can, no trouble at all.

Yeah, so I don't know if you need to hack the smb.conf file?? to create a global share in there maybe??

Woah! No need to hack. I'm thinking you mean the following.

1. Create a user group called, say, "users" and add the users you wish to access the share to that group.
2. Create an iBay called "company" and this will be your share and when creating this you can assign group access. If you set the group to "users" and the permissions to "Write = group and Read = group" this should allow only the group "users" to have read write access to the share "company".

I think that this is what you are after. Hope it helps.

this is basic networking. a 'workgroup' needs to have the same user/pass on all machines to be able to access shared resources.

the power of a domain is that different users can access shared resources depending on their permissions. ie. arthurhanlon's solution. (even if you did this, as a workgroup you would still have to type a user/pass if it wasn't the same as the login user/pass)

Indeed, but to keep things correct, I opted for a domain scenario. One password for user and shared resource.  Will give arhturanlon's suggestion a go.  Thanks again to all and regards

arhturanlon is absolutely right - I setup exactly his scenario on my wife's business SME server, and also on my home server.  The share provides access to all authorised users in in the user group which has access rights without requiring additional username/password verification.  It provides 3 folders, html for web pages cgi-bin for web executables and  files for general stuff. I generally arrange for network drives on each client PC to go direcly to the files folder so the users don't see the html and cgi-bin folders.

I am not going to split hairs here, I am just grateful, for all your help and support.  By the way, when you join SME to a domain, you join it to a workgroup in the cantrol panel, don't you?

Sorry if the "workgroup" term has thrown you off-side a bit, I should have just called it a share, my apologies, too many long nights
