Hello all I sporadically visit here. I am currently using a heavy modified 5.6 . My question is what is the lastest greatest stable version as of right now.
Is 6.1 the lastest stable version?

Basically I need to put in a bigger harddrive and I am toying with the idea of upgrading my system up to the latest stable version.
I also need to be able to install some custom contribs.

Thanks in advance for the info.

Yes, 6.01 is the latest stable version. If you can wait, hold out for 7, it has some pretty sweet features.

any idea how much longer intil 7 is official? Im not really in a hurry because Im  also thinking of upgrading the system and to a dual processor setup later on this year. I just want to explore my options I have been using this since 4.something and tend to upgrade version/system every 8 to 16 months. In the past 2 years I started using some of the contribs.

The main ones that I like are
1. FTP root user
2. MRTG
3. DynDns - which is the reason I have used 5.6 for the past 2.5 years.
4.Upgrade via server manager
Plus a few others that are not really important I just like them .

Does 7 have these features with out having to install anything extra. I dont mind installing extras but dont want the level of a custom system like I have now.

I also want anti virus aince I cant seem to find one that works with 5.6 without breaking my email which caused me to have to do an emergency reload/reconfigure one morning after breaking email

Version 7?

I too am interested in the roadmap for the Version 7 release.

It says Alpha... Presumably it still has to go into Beta for sometime before being considered stable?

I'm wondering if I can get away with installing it and patching it as updates come out, without losing the system...

First off, do not run the 7alpha version on a production server.

Also, updates may or may not work correctly.  7alpha has moved from centos3 to centos4.1 midstream (alpha22 or 23 if I remember correctly).  Updating did not work very well.  Some alphas had major package changes and thus the reason it is still alpha.  The next alpha appears to even have some directory structure changes.

When it reaches Beta, it should be much closer to the final version.  Patching/updating from beta to final will probably be a better idea.

The developers are going at it in a feverish pace.  20+ alphas in just over 3 months, that's almost 2 per week average.

When will it be ready you ask?  The standard answer applies here:  "When it is ready!"
In life, you must either "Push, Pull or Get out of the way!"

Simply upgrading your 5.6 box to 6.x will solve your problem, then you can install a currebt antivirus solution. That upgrade is supported and as you say you don't have any specialist contribs installed then the upgrade should be smooth.

When sme 7 comes out (which will be some months away yet) then upgrade your 6.x box to 7 as that will be definitely supported.
I doubt that an upgrade from 5.6 to 7 will be supported though.

By the way 5.6 is insecure too.

Upgrading is not an option because
Quote
I am currently using a heavy modified 5.6 server

I will have to do a full install because I have all of the following installed plus some I know I dont remember.

1. MRTG *
2. FTP Changeroot *
3. Upgrade via server manager *
4. Portscan
5. Bandwidth limiting
6. DHCP Manager
7. phpmyadmin *
8. Port Forwarding *
9. System Info *
10. AWSTATS
11.

So as you can see I cannot do a upgrade. Plus If I recall 6.1 does not come with a dyndns setting so I will have to find a way to update. Now that I think about it I might not be able to update to version 6 because I do seem to recall that on the test box I loaded late last night I dont remember seeing that option and I have to have that.

Are you sure that 6.1 doesn't come with a dyndns setting?  :-?
I have been using it with dyndns no problem for   quite a few months and I haven't installed any contribs to use it  ;-)

Not sure it was very late  when I installed it and I have not touched the system since then so I might have missed the setting in my rush to get a test system setup in preparation for a future upgrade.

Thanks for all the advice ...I have not had a chance to go back to looking at 6.1 because of some issues that needed to be addressed with another pc at home the was resolved by reloading the os.

What is the deal with 6.5 RC ? Is is this a beta release?
