PDC for WinXP PC's
« on: July 21, 2005, 05:47:44 PM »
I've got a friend that runs an old NT server on a
domain for his companies network.  He is interested
in replacing the server with a SME box since he would
be able to do email & web then instead of paying for
hosting elsewhere.

Is there a step-by=step doc to creating a PDC for a
NT domain?  I think we would like to create a new
domain and have the users all login to it instead of
trying to migrate from the domain he already has(he's
not a techie and has some wierd things happen on the
domain).

What process do I need to complete to add the
machines to the new domain?

All help is appreciaited

SME does PDC right out of the box ... a simple setting in the server manager allows domain services with or without roaming profiles.  Don't forget that with or without roaming profiles, 2K and XP machines will need settings & documents copied to the new domain user profile on each workstation after the domain is changed.  Personally, I wouldn't jump from domain to domain directly; I'd change each workstation to be a member of a workgroup first, then join the new domain.

kadd,
To join the domain, you will need to install a reg hack on the XP boxes. It is available on the server, or you can get it easily at http://www.15bob.com/modules/mydownloads/
download and run winxplogon.reg on each XP box
