I seem to remember - in the not too distant past - someone posted a howto for getting X up and running on a SMEServer box. If anyone has a link, I would appreciate it.

No worries - however, in tthe words of the wise "This is not a good idea". I have a fairly specific reason for doing this.

You need to collect the following packages in to the one directory. If you have the "Dev tools" installed you will already have cpp.

chkfontpath-1.10.0-2.i386.rpm
cpp-3.4.3-22.1.i386.rpm
xinitrc-4.0.14-1.noarch.rpm
fonts-xorg-100dpi-6.8.1.1-1.EL.1.noarch.rpm
fonts-xorg-75dpi-6.8.1.1-1.EL.1.noarch.rpm
xorg-x11-6.8.2-1.EL.13.6.i386.rpm
fonts-xorg-base-6.8.1.1-1.EL.1.noarch.rpm
xorg-x11-font-utils-6.8.2-1.EL.13.6.i386.rpm
xorg-x11-xauth-6.8.2-1.EL.13.6.i386.rpm
xorg-x11-xfs-6.8.2-1.EL.13.6.i386.rpm
switchdesk-4.0.6-3.noarch.rpm
ttmkfdir-3.0.9-14.i386.rpm
xterm-192-1.i386.rpm
libungif-4.1.3-1.i386.rpm

from here

And WindowMaker-0.80.2-6.i386.rpm from here

Code: [Select]
rpm -ivh *.rpm
Xorg -configure
mv /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and fix up the mouse line (should be /dev/input/mouse0 for a ps2 mouse)

Code: [Select]
switchdesk Windowmaker
startx

Hopefully that should do it. Works on my setup.

@duncan, by default there is no mouse 'device'  in /dev/...

X will fail to start.

(using Beta2)

Thx! that did it.

YFYI: Trying to get X installed for NoMachine. Trying to see if I can have some thin clients connected quickly for easy use in the kitchen etc.

Not running yet, installed nxserver files from centos 4.1 ' extra' dir, up and running but ssh is playing tricks with me

X window system on SME 6
« Reply #11 on: October 09, 2005, 08:09:12 PM »
Hi everyone,

Does X-window work on SME 6? Could somebody post a How-to?

I am hooked-up to a provider giving me only a dynamic IP. My problem is how to activate my account when my ISP is using a graphic authentication system.

Thanks.

P.S. I tried to install RH9 with X-windows and my connection was authenticated and went fine. However, NAT-ing drove me to a blank-wall -- nothing in my head to comprehend the technicalities of IPTABLES. Searching thru documentations and other forums further confused me and led me back to the simplicity of SME installation in reference to internet sharing.
