How safe is 6.5RC1?
« on: July 23, 2005, 07:03:11 PM »
I am going to build a personal firewall and email server for my home DSL connection.  Is RC1 stable enough for a limited use install like this?  I have been waiting to hear word on how RC2 is coming or if RC1 was just going to be realeased but I havent had time to support the community much in the last while and now am just in need of this server.  I have no problem making it a 6.0.1-01 box if that is best, but Of course I would like to get the latest I can.

Thanks to all who make this community work!  I hope to contribute more in the comming months.

I've been running it for Months and have no problems. I use it as a gateway/firewall and webserver/mailserver.

I am using it in 2 locations in server-only mode and am having no issues with it.

I've suddenly got a peculiar problem on my 6.5rc1.
I'm used to performing administrative jobs on my server from my workstation at work.
Suddenly I'm locked out of everything - I can't access my website, webmail or server-manager, nor will putty connect any longer - simply no answer.
At first I suspected the wizz-kids at our headquartes of fiddling with the firewall, but they swear that they haven't.
If I'm sitting anywhere else there's no problem, only the ip-adress from work seems to be blocked.
In another post (in general discussion) someone mentioned that the problem is not unknown, and that the only solution is to reinstall from scratch.
Can that really be true ?

When you try to connect via ssh or webmail, look at your logs.  There should be some kind of an entry in /var/log/messages if you are really making it to your server.  I remotely administer all the servers I support, and haven't seen this issue.

Hi, JB
I must admit that I haven't gone through the logs, since my Logwatch doesn't report anything at all related to the specific ip-adress (from work), whereas it is abundant in reports on other invalid access-attempts.

The peculiar thing falls in two parts:
First I can get as far as the router with no problem - but my server doesn't respond. The connection just dies.
Second, anyone else, including me if I login from anywhere else than at work, can gain access to web and webmail.

I remember fiddling with a Dungog-contribs download and install (through putty) when the server stopped responding.
Coming home I restarted the server, and since then I'm blacklisted (but again, only from my workstation at work).

wyron,

I'm out of ideas.  Do you know which contrib from Dungog you tried?  Something is definitely blocking you from somewhere, since you never see anything in your logs.  Yeah, I know you already know that.  I hit your site today and was able to get a webmail login screen.  Do you have logs on your router that show that you are getting that far?

Hi again, JB
It's coming back to me in bits and pieces now - I believe I was in the middle of installing the ftpchroot-contrib when it happened . . . and yes, the router is a Vigor 2900V posting hosts and ports in a NAT active sessions table.
I tried just now to connect to my website, and I am displayed in the table too - only with a non-active status.
I even scratched and reconfigured the router some days ago, just to be sure, but to no avail.
This really buggers me!
Greetings
