Hostnames and addresses, external access, port opening
« on: July 29, 2005, 08:20:26 AM »
Hi.

I've done quite a bit of searching in the forums and have RTFM; however, I'm still stumped as to why I can't access services (ftp, vpn, www, etc.) from outside the LAN.

I'm using SME 6.0.1-01 and dyndns for dynamic hostname resolution.

From what I understand all I have to do is change the "Visability" of a particular hostname (e.g., vpn.<mydomain>.com) to "Global" in the "Hostnames and addresses" section of the server manager and this will automagically make that particular hostname visable/accessible from outside the LAN.

Is this correct or do I have to open a corresponding port in conjunction with making the hostname's visability global?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry if my response is somewhat elementary, but have you confirmed that your ISP is not blocking those ports?  I tried configuring the heck out of my SME server to no avail only to find that the ISP was blocking the ports.  Try running a port scan from outside the network.

I did a port scan outside the LAN using

nmap -F <mycomputer.mydomain.com>

This said that ports 22,25,80,113,139,443 are open. So technically (since port 80 is open) I should be able to get to my webpage from outside the LAN.

Well, I just tried it again and it worked! I also just ssh'd into my machine and this worked also. I don't know what was wrong before. I've been trying to get outside access to work for quite a while and now it just works?  ... sorry for the bother!  :-D

That's only true if you are using Mitel's ServiceLink.

So are you saying that changing the "Visability" option doesn't do anything in the GPL'd version?

Correct. That option won't appear in 7.0.
