Topic: How to get updated network driver

I have SME 6.0.1 up and running, but was unable to use the nic on the intel motherboard because it wasn't recognized.  I went to intel and downloaded the source.  I beleive I need a compiled module (yes, I'm a newbie) with a .o extension, but Intel doesn't provide that.  My assumption is the make install needs to be done.  Trying that on the a mandrake 10 box didn't work because the kernel version is higher (2.6.x) versus 2.4.20.  Source isn't on the sme box (and probably shouldn't be for security reasons?).  Is there any way to get the module built without having a linux distro with the same kernel version?  Otherwise what are my options, where can I find a build enviro?

BTW, the link for prepping the sme box w/ source is broken, so I couldn't do further research there.

why don't you post the nic and maybe someone can point you in the right direction?

With decent NICs so cheap, what I generally do is save my time & energy and slap a $25 NIC in the box, disabling the onboard.  I've come back a time or two later and enabled onboard Intel with Darrel May's packaged RPMS (thanx!) but really, IMHO it's more trouble than it's worth.
