Server Only Mode Problem
« on: August 07, 2005, 06:46:40 PM »
I'm trying to setup SME with Server only mode. I dowloaded Version 7 and wanted to connect it to my local network and kinda hack on it a little without messing with my stable SME Server-Gateway Machine.

How do I get it to accept DHCP from the other SME Server?

It asks for a ipaddress and gateway but it no option for DHCP.

I just want this part of my local network to hack on...It's not really going to do much.

I don't believe you can get SME to accept DHCP in this exact situation - although I have been wondering if you could if you set it in Server and Gateway mode with only one NIC, and trusted your internal network.

What I do in this situation is give it a static IP outside the DHCP ip address range (192.168.0.64 or less in my setup). It works fine for testing in this config.

It didn't work. All the other machine on the network are using DHCP and run fine. I only have 1 Nic card in this machine and im running it in server only mode. I cant connect to the server manager or ping it.

Then you didn't set it up correctly.  Assuming the NIC chipset is correctly detected, you should have assigned it an IP address on the appropriate subnet OUTSIDE the DHCP range of your existing DHCP server.  Gateway is irrelevant for purposes of this discussion; you can leave this blank.

I do a ifconfig on the box and it read 192.168.0.61 but I cant seem to ping it (I believe the manual says it rejects ping anyways) or connect to the server manager via https://testbox/server-manager or https://192.168.0.61/server-manager.

There's also a bug to where if you make changes in the server manager on the machine at the end it says there were no changes made and it takes you to the first screen again even though I clearly have been making changes..

TYPO ALERT!  Read your post ... did you set it up as 192.167.0.61?  That's very different from 192.168.0.61!
