FTP Root access?
« on: August 08, 2005, 12:26:05 PM »
Hi,
Is it possible to gain complete root access of the whole system via ftp?
Or is there another way to do this?
Thanks in advance,
Joe

You can gain root access via SSH (port 22 normaly)

Download Putty and try this.

I take it this is all you meant ? , or do you have some need to be able to access via FTP

Thanks for your reply, Ive managed to gain access to it using the command promt but what I can't do is actually access the entire file system, ie directories and files etc via windows.
Thanks

hi, if you just want to access directories and files within Windows then try putty then run mc (midnight commander)from the shell...

hope this helps,

You can also try winscp...

WinSCP is an open source SFTP client for Windows. Its main function is the secure file transfer between a local and a remote computer. Beyond this, WinSCP offers basic file manager functionality. It uses Secure Shell (SSH) and supports, in addition to Secure FTP, also legacy SCP protocol

....and stay on the light side :-D

WinSCP is free, open-source software, and is distributed under the GNU General Public License (GPL).

or use konqueror on a linux box ( Knoppix live CD for exemple) with fish fish://user@server

Quote
KNOPPIX is a bootable Live system on CD or DVD, consisting of a representative collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. KNOPPIX can be used as a productive Linux system for the desktop, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk.

These tools use ssh to access the server and are very easy to use.
FTP root acces is a very very bad idea. :hammer:

MC works really well its hard to br using windows then to have to go all the way back to the command line way of doing things, I will try WinSCP though as it does sound quite good.
At the mo I'm setting up SME to test to see if it would be better to use than windows 2003, it is looking alot better though!
Cheers

Konqueror is a very good way to manage this too.
It permit direct edition and file modification on distant server where winscp need download and upload.

The advantage of a linux live system is that it can't be compromised by virus, spyware, rootkit or keylogger cause it use a read only filesystem (cd or dvd) and mount all partition in read only mode at startup, it's also a very good rescue tool for win crash  :-D

Sorry for my bad english... :-?
