Hi,

I'm getting ready to deploy a 601 system in a small office.  They do e-mail externally, and no real need to bring this in-house right now.  This server will be a file server/domain controller only; no firewall, e-mail...

I would like to set the system up to e-mail various logs, alarms, etc. to an external e-mail address.  I'm not on-site, and would like to know if there is a change in RAID health and other critical issues.

What is the best way to accomplish this if I don't have the server set up as a mail server (or do I need to)?  I would like to set up a simple mechanism to mail out this information without the need for a full-fledged e-mail server.  That is, send e-mail out through a pop3 account on our ISP's e-mail server.

Set it up as a normal mail server. Tell it to use the ISP mail server. Set yourself up to receive the admin notices.

Make sure you specify a gateway during the initial console setup, and set your ISP's SMTP server in the Email part of server-manager.  Then set the email address you want administrative alerts sent to, and there you have it.

This has a secondary benefit that you can set your users' SMTP to the SME server and it will act as an in-house relay, so for instance if you send a large attachment it will go at network speed to the SME server, thence at your Internet speed out to your ISP's SMTP server.  This is especially nice for those poor souls still on dialup ...
