Multiple connectios to one file
« on: August 11, 2005, 02:12:14 AM »
I have a customer that runs a program off a share on the sme. The program basically run off a series of executable files in a directory and multiple people run this program. Most of the year this is fine and it works well. During specific times of the year this company get busier and more people start running the program and they start getting errors in the program ie drops out, says there is corruption in program but no corruption if they go out and go back in it works for a little while again. If we move the program to a win xp box it is ok and everybody can access it but on the sme share it starts having problems. Is there any settings on the sme that increases concurrent connections or can increase the number of people accessing one file?
Any help would be appreaciated.

How many people/connections are we talking here? Is this app running off a flat database file, with the file on the SME and the app local? This could be a limitation of the application itself not being able to handle XX connections, or your network being overloaded. I've seen some of these take as much as 10Mbps, not that you're limited to 10 people on 10/100Mbps connection, but as you put the more people getting on it will make it unavailable sometimes.

Search here on opportunistic locking; Google for some Windows client tweaks.

Also grab James Prices Avandved Workgroup contrib that allows some Samba tweaking.
