I have pre-setup Dansguardian questions which I haven’t found specific info for on the forum. I am asking these questions before install so I don’t have to redo the process later.
I have seen I can setup Dansguardian on SME from the contribs. However, what is the fee by the dungog site? Is it weekly updates? Is there anyway to have a free list of updates?
Is there any advantage to having a Linksys router before the SME server on the network when implementing Dansguardian? I know the SME would act differently and not be technically a gateway. Does giving away router/gateway capability hinder the filtering options for Dansguardian? I would think the Linksys won’t be necessary or helpful, but wanted to ask before I did away with it.
My biggest question deals with hardware. This setup is for a small school. I want to have SME set as private server/gateway with Dansguardian, antivirus (add on contrib), and fetch mail (and possible SpamAssassin). I don’t intend to have a website hosted right now. I have about 75 users with roaming profiles on W2K workstations. Would a P4 1.6Ghz machine (256 RAM or more, 80g scsi hds) be sufficient on a 10/100 mb network for the amount of users I want to have?
I have looked at the hardware requirements on the SME manual, but they don’t include having add-ons for extra filtering like this would need. If you can help, please let me know your thoughts. I don’t want to buy a CPU that is not powerful enough to suit my needs, but don’t want throw away money either on a machine that is more than I really need. If it were me, I would buy the best, but budgets are tight, so I must explore all options.
