What mini-itx are you using whith sme?
« on: August 23, 2005, 08:58:03 PM »
Hi,
As you may have seen in other threads I have problems with sme 601 and my via epia-V mini-itx board:
http://www.viavpsd.com/product/Download.jsp?motherboardId=141

I, and perhaps others, would like to buy or get a new one, since I do like the small size and little watts it uses.
So I would like to know: What mini-itx motherboard do you use with what version of sme server succesfully.

Your input will help me and others to buy the right stuff.

thanks

SMEserver 6xx is based on RedHat 7.3 so hardware supported by RH 7.3 will also work with SME6xx. (but I'm sure you know this)

RH did have a hardware compatibilty db on the website, just tsaken a look at it but it only now works for Enterprise versions of RH :(

Over the years I've personally not seen alot of mention round here of mini-itx motherboard based systems.  I can appreciate why you would want to use such hardware but most folks seem to be using older PCs or full on server hardware.

If you are having problems with onboard ethernet (recall this from the ViaRhine thread yessterday), a couple of low profile PCI network card could get you up an running.  Sure I have RTL81xx based ethernet card(s) running in 6xx based systems, but not 100% sure, they have not needed touching for so long :)

Hi,

I use the Via Epia CL10000, which includes 2 LAN adapters, well suited for my SME 6.01 server and gateway.
I have it equipped with 512 MB RAM and a 300GB disk, and it have been running without any problems for more than a year now.

As far as I remember, the CL10000 is an outdated model now, but the Epia PD also includes two LAN adapters. (I don't really know the difference, I haven't read the specs of the PD)

I would gladly recommend the Epia CL motherboard.

Regards
Per Smith

Hi

I am running 2 servers, one CL10000 w. dual LAN and one Epia V 533MHz. They are both running SME 6.01 and they both have software RAID1. I don't have problems with them. Only thing is that sometimes the network stops for a second or two, but continues again. Other people have that problem too, so i don't think it's VIA related. I can run some tests on them if you want, you just have to give me the right commands.
I can only recommend the CL10000.

Hans-Cees,

As we have discussed in the other threads,

Currently running it on a VIA EPIA-M (1000 mhz)  Only has one network adapter on board.  2nd network adapter in pci slot.  Working fine.  Used for home network - have had no problems (other than those I have caused myself)

Have also had it working on VIA EPIA-V (1000 mhz).  Would not recommend this as it only has one ide channel.

Hi,
Could you run on the epia-v
hdparm -Tt /dev/hda
and post that?
Also
lspci and post the nic (rhine xx)

please? That might help.

Why do you recommend the cl1000 and not the other?

[root@bjarneserver root]# hdparm -Tt /dev/md0 (It's a RAID 1)

/dev/md0:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   128 MB in  2.09 seconds = 61.24 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  64 MB in  2.17 seconds = 29.49 MB/sec

Duh! Sorry, i expressed myself in a bad way. I ment:
I can only RECOMMEND, and not: I can ONLY recommend.
So what i mean is i really like that board. It has USB2 which i use for backup to external HD. It has ATA 133 for my 200 GB Drives. Dual LAN for Server/Gateway mode. Perfect for my needs at the moment, but i'm sure there is newer/better boards in their programs now.

Hope it's helpfull :-)

Hi again

I also have an Epia V that i use for my Asterisk@home box. It's running on Centos 3.4 with latest updates. And it has an old 9 GB or so drive
I did the same tests on that:

[root@asterisk-pbx root]# hdparm -Tt /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   240 MB in  2.02 seconds = 118.81 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:   28 MB in  3.00 seconds =   9.33 MB/sec

Hi,

What kind of test do you mean? I can install on my Epia V board to test hardware comp. and so, but i can't do much testing of email webserver and all that.

Installing 7.0beta and checking that your Epia platform is well detected should be a good point. Detection means that i586 kernel is used instead of i686. Other parts like emails test is not specific to your platform.

Already mailed it, please send it back :-)

But seriously you should check if via-rhine nic's perform well both from the system to outside and back.
Also the hdparm -Tt /dev/hda test.

I do not know how you can see if thekernel has a i586 cpu? How can you see that?

There is a file in my 6.01: /boot/kernel.h In there it says it's a 586.

I will test this over the weekend. Earlier if i get the time.
