In the documentation, there is a great diagram in section 4.3.2 that describes how e-smith should be setup with ADSL/cable modems.
One of your network cards should be connected to your LAN (e-smith suggests 192.168.1.1), and the other should point to your IP address from your ISP. In the setup, it asks you for your gateway IP address and this is the address you should enter.
In your post, you give Class A addresses as examples. This is incorrect. Either you have a static IP from your ISP or you need to use the DHCP options to get a non-static IP address. Either way, you should not be entering 10.0.0.x addresses in the setup fields.
