problems talking to SME server from windows XP
« on: September 27, 2005, 11:11:20 AM »
I've set up SME server in server only mode and have added a few users, all in the same group, with an i-bay for the group.

Last week it all seemed to work fine - I could get access to the machine by typing in \\ipaddress\ in the windows 'run' box, and I could see all the sub-directories for the users, and the ibay.

This week, however, I'm having a weird problem. I can only get access to a users' directory on the server if the users name and password are the same as their windows machine's login name and password. Otherwise it says (in a popup window), as soon as I try and access the server, "\\ipaddress\shared is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource...". It doesn't even ask me for a username and password.

Any ideas? I hope I have explained that ok- it's a little weird.

Dave,

What version of SME are you running?
Is the server your domain controller?
Are you logging into the server?
Is the "Windows Workgroup" Name for the SME the same as your windows XP domain or workgroup?

Setting up the SME to accept logins from XP Pro and to run a script to connect user to ibays in their groups and to a home directory is failly easy to set up, so if you want to do this just post back and you will be helped.

Hi,
I'm running SME server 6.0.1 and it is not the domain controller (I'm inside a much, much bigger MS network). The windows workgroup name is the same as the XP domain.

I've fathomed out that everything is okay when I'm on the same subnet, but if I try to use a machine on a different subnet (although I've enabled the additional subnets in sme server-manager in 'local networks') I get this problem. It's almost like my client machine is automatically trying to use my windows XP login username/password to get access to the SME server, rather than presenting me with the option of logging in as whoever I like.

Do you by any chance have another share mapped as a drive - this would (I think ) produce the message you describe.
