What to backup in SME7
« on: September 27, 2005, 11:51:56 PM »
Hi.
I would really like to test out the ability to backup and more importantly restore data for the purposes of server backups and or migration.
Since many files have been moved in version 7 I am no longer sure what to backup. Could someone please provide me with a list of files / Directories and i will test!!!!

The SME Server already includes backup to desktop via HTTP (limited to at most 4Gbytes, depending on your OS), and tape.

A tape backup is a complete system backup. A desktop backup only includes user data and configuration files.

Restores only restore user data and configuration files in either case. The list of files/directories restored can be found in /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/esmith/Backup.pm

I was experimenting with some homemade backup routines for a while a go (backup to usb harddisk, worked nice, but I dont use it anymore.).)

I was courious to find out exately which files that were into a standard bacup.

By coincidence I discovered an easy very easy way to find out this.

I first made a standard bacup to workstation.

By accident I clicked on the sme bacupfile using the winrar program. To my surprice the winrar program opened the backup file and I could read all content of it. (It aperaed to be selected file directories from the server.

By the way, I think dumping and restoring mysql datafiles is one major issue doing your own backups/restores. Dont remember the details around this. I believe that the mysql home page got some info.

Dumping and restoring of mysql databases is part of the standard
SME server backup/restore system.
