talking to SME server from ubuntu linux
« on: October 04, 2005, 02:08:45 PM »
I've got SME server 6.0.1 (server only mode) running fine with a number of windows XP clients. However I'm now trying to access some of the ibays from a client PC with Ubuntu linux. If I choose 'connect to server' in Ubuntu I get a large selection of options (ftp, http, windows share etc). I've tried quite a few options but I just can't get it to play ball. I can definitely ping the server, access the server-manager through a web browser and through SSH. But no joy connecting to the ibays. Can anyone help?

Dont remember 100 % for sure, but I think that the Ubuntu has a graphical network directory tool, that makes you able to "see" the windows shares.

You then click into a workgrup, and from there into a shared resource. You then click on that one and it comes up with a logon promt. Using an acount/password from the sme server, with the right access you will come inn. (Into the proper Samba share.)

Hope I remember this right. I used an SME 7.0 configured as workgroup member and a Ubuntu recent revision when I tried this.

thanks for the suggestion.

Actually I'm finding this on my windows machines as well - I need to log in to ibays with the same username and password as the machine has, sometimes.

It's a bit restrictive - is there anyway around this? In an ideal world I should be able to access an ibay from whatever username and password I chose, irrespective of the machine I'm on (and what log in name it has). What if I want to go onto the SME server as 'admin' for example, but I'm not logged into the client as admin?

Aaargh!!!

Hi Dave - This is a feature, not a problem - Windows will automatically hand your logon userid and password to SME when it asks for validation, saving you the trouble to type it in again. Ubuntu won't do this, but at least only asks you to log in once per ibay - there was one distro, I think it was Suse, that wanted a logon every time I changed folders!

Assuming the admin account has access, either map a drive and choose "Connect using a different user name" (if the name you logged on with has access), or log on with a username that doesn't have access, and type in "admin" and password when it asks, or hold down the shift key and go Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Windows Explorer and right click and choose "Run As" and type in "Admin" and password.
