Tried and Tested forms of Backup
« on: October 08, 2005, 05:55:28 AM »
Hi,

I run a server from home with a 120gb hard drive. I write a fair bit of PHP scripts. I would like to keep all these backed up, plus back up the rest of my server from time to time, includeing mail etc.

I have been reading for the last couple of days on different forms of backup.

I don't have a tape drive and don't intend on buying one. Because of the cost.

I loved the back up to Desktop option, but it seems to get stuck on large backups. i loved the way it compressed on the fly.

Backup2ws looks lik a go, but there seems to be people out there with problems, not sure if they are all resolved. I am thinking about trying this out on my test server, as i want to make sure I know how to restore from the backup.

I did look at Backup to USB HDD, but does Rsync compress or just do exact copies?

Backup to DVD sounded good, although I don't think it's storage capacity is as good as what I'm after, plus with a server that is up to 80 days of uptime, I don't feel lke shuting it down to stick a drive in there.

Those of you backing up large amounts of data what do you recommend. hopefully something with the least stress.

DMays contrib is the greatest I have created the backup I need and it works without anymore input from me.

You need the BTW contrib a RAR compression rpm & license for RAR
$29 dollars I think when I bougth mine You can demo RAR to try BTW

It backs up to a local share on a workstation or server

like //hostname/backup emails you when done

Now also tested on Sme 7beta4 - by me and working as it should

Set it and forget it!
