Migrate to new hard drive
« on: October 12, 2005, 04:13:06 AM »
I would like to move my SME server from my 60 GB Hard drive to a 160 GB drive.  How is the best way to do this?  I have quite a few users and about 30 GB of data.

The easiest way would be to clone the drive (using Norton Ghost or similar) & make a larger partition automatically out of the free space on the new larger drive. That would also transfer all the installed contribs.
If you use backup2ws or similar then you will need to reinstall all the additional contribs.

Ghost has already failed

I have already tried Ghost, and it failed to copy the drive.  It starts to index the drive but when it starts to copy, it fails.

I was trying to create a ghost image across the network, I have not tried a disk to disk ghost clone.

I am considering using Lazy admin tools to migrate settings and users.  Then copy the data into the ibays across the network.

If it's a single disk server (not software RAID1) then a disk to disk clone should work OK.

That will work but you will need to reinstall the OS &  contribs etc. You did ask for the "best way", and cloning would be the simplest & easiest.

Migrate to new hard drive

Thanks for the reply.  I will give it a try tomorrow.  I would really prefer to do the clone, if I can get it to work.  I tried to pull a network image last night (3 times).  Ghost scanned and indexed the drive, then failed when it began to copy.  I use Ghost alot (almost daily) in our repair shop fixing M$ boxes that are corrupt with spyware, virus, adware, etc.  I have never had it fail the way it did last night before.  I will post my results tomorrow night.

Using Ghost V8 to clone a sme box works fine. Just make sure your first 2 partitions are indentical in size to the original hd then allow the third partition (that holding the data) to take up the remainder of the hard disk

Migrate to new Hard Drive

My migration has turned into a MAJOR problem.  First I tried to create a Ghost (verson 8 enterprise) image across my network, it failed.  Then I tried a disk to disk clone, it failed.  It seems that my current disk has some bad sectors and when Ghost tries to copy them, it halts the Ghost process.  I am going to use Lazy Admin Tools to move the users, then transfer the data to the ibays.  I have a problem with the security certificate.  How can I move it?
