My SME 6.5 (rc1 AIR) is setup up as my home e-mail, web and file server (
www.shadowsfall.org and
www.aviondreams.com if anyone cares). My cable internet provider is Comcast so I can not get a fixed IP. My cable 'modem' connects to my Linksys firewall which then connects to all the rest of the computers and printer on my home network. My domains come from EasyDNS (they point traffic to my IP) but are hosted on my home server.
The problem is this. Every now and then Comcast changes my IP. I have gone 6 months between changes and I have gone only two weeks between changes. When it happens I have to figure out what went wrong (though the lack of e-mail for several hours is a good clue), get into my Linksys, a BEFSX41, find my new IP then log onto EasyDNS and update my records, then wait for their DNS servers to reboot. Is there anyway to automate this process? Is DDclient what I am looking for?
It is not so tough to do, but if I was away for a week it would be a little upsetting to have missed a weeks worth of e-mail. After all I'm still waiting for that nice gentleman from Nigeria to send me my 5 million dollars.
