Hi,
I have a wierd problem - that has me staring in amazement. I must be missing something, but I dont know what. I am sure that I will be embaressed when someone slaps me with an answer.
Scenario
SME 6.0 - basic with antivirus contrib only. Setup as server/gateway.
Server thinks its called chief.x.com and that the remotely hosted web site
www.x.com is at address 1.2.3.4.
Then theres a few Winblows XP clients.
Client machines can see
www.x.com just fine via the specially defined host name.
System is 3 years old - only down for power outages.
Problem
We change from dial up to ADSL 2 - hooray. Everything runs brilliant. Three weeks later..... We cant see
www.x.com from the Windblows clients.
At the server
lynx
www.x.com -> see external website
ping
www.x.com -> get the 1.2.3.4 address of the external website
At the Windblows clients
command prompt - ping
www.x.com -> get correct ip for
www.x.com - confirmed same as server and same as external machine 100km's away.
IE and freshly installed Firefox - browse
www.x.com -> gets start of admin page for the domain, not the web site. The admin pages are at a different address to
www.x.com say 1.2.3.6
It looks like -> Windows is getting different dns results for http requests than for command line pings - WHAT? But that surely cant be.
Have flushed windows DNS cache.
Worse still my old faithful laptop behaves the same way at that office - but works as intended at other similarly configured offices. Hey I got a few of them and they have been there for 3-4 years.
It's gotta be the server... but where? I am still stuck at dns is the same for all applications....
Q: Why wont web browsers go to the same site that lynx does?
thanks
